No more forcing or coercing judges to retire or praying that they die There needs to be a hard limit of 18 years for federal elected positions. I think we also should have an 18 year limit on appointed positions like SCOTUS Justices or federal judges. IOW, you could do both in theory for a max of 36 years, but then you’re absolutely out. So if you want to be a Senator, you get 3 terms of 6 years, MAX. If you want to be a US Representative, you get 9 terms of 2 years, MAX. If you want to mix and match, fine, but you still have an 18 year ceiling. You could be a Rep for a couple terms then become Senator, but you just can’t cross the 18 year mark. And if things just didn’t match up perfectly for you and you somehow got elected as Senator with only a couple year left of your 18, well you would have to resign and let your state’s governor appoint your replacement until the next election, just like if there was a death or resignation. I think it would be extremely rare for someone to go from Congress to a federal judge or SCOTUS seat, but it could happen even now under current rules. Worst case, you could have an 18 year Congressional veteran that becomes a federal judge/justice with another 18 years to ago, and that would be a maximum of 36 years TOTAL. I think that still would be vastly superior to the unlimited Congressional terms and lifetime appointments on federal benches.
